Air

The main regional airport, Aeropuerto Base Buenaventura Vivas, is about 1½ hours away in Santo Domingo, with no direct public transportation. A taxi costs US$10.

Bus

From the bus terminal, more than a dozen buses daily go to Caracas (US$2.50, 13 hours). Most depart in the late afternoon or evening for an overnight trip via El Llano highway. Ordinary buses to Barinas (US$1.25, five hours) run hourly between 5am and 6:30pm.

Expresos Unidos buses to Mérida (US$1.25, five hours) go every 1½ hours from 5:30am to 7pm, but depart earlier if full (arrive by 6pm to make the last departure). Frequent buses depart nightly for Maracaibo (US$1.80, eight hours); make sure the route takes the faster Panamerican Hwy.

Minibuses to San Antonio del Táchira (US$0.25, 1¼ hours), on the Colombian border, run every 10 or 15 minutes; it’s a spectacular but busy road. If you are in a rush, consider taking a por puesto (US$0.50).
