When Andrew Jackson swore the oath of office in 1829, the self-proclaimed populist dispensed with pomp and circumstance and, quite literally, threw a raging kegger. Pretty much the whole city attended and imbibed heavily. The historical lesson: DC loves a drink, and these days it enjoys said tipples in venues from dive bars to cocktail bars to fresh breweries. Here's the other thing to remember: Washington is a big happy-hour town. Congressional staffers need to decompress after the senator's latest appropriations bill, right? And what better way than over two-for-one cans of DC Brau and half-price burgers? Practically all bars have some sort of drink or food special for a few hours between 4pm and 7pm. Downtown, Capitol Hill and Dupont Circle see the most guzzling action.
