Off I-70 (exit 190), Vail Pass is one of the top winter backcountry destinations in the state. The 55,000 acres are shared-access, for both motorized (snowmobiles) and nonmotorized (skiers and snowboarders) users. In addition to the trails groomed by the forest service, you can access four backcountry huts from here. (You must have avalanche gear if you enter the backcountry.)
