With its bags of heirloom grits and photos of crop-dotted fields, the tasting room at Asheville Distilling Co evokes the vibe of a cozy Appalachian barn. The rustic look aligns with the goal of founder Troy Ball: to produce an authentic Scots-Irish un-aged whiskey. Taste five different whiskeys on the twice-weekly tours.
Ball, who moved to Asheville with her family in 2004 from Texas, took an interest in un-aged whiskey after neighbors from her rural neighborhood brought gifts of moonshine. An energetic entrepreneur, Ball soon realized that there were no quality white whiskeys on the market. She decided to fill that niche with artisan 'moonshine,' becoming the first woman founder of a whiskey distillery in modern times.
