Nicknamed 'the Birthplace of Texas,' this Washington is where Texas declared its independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836. Today you can still get a feel for the frontier in this rugged naturalistic park on the flood-carved banks of the Brazos River.
The drive here on FM 1155 from Chappell Hill to the south takes in some beautiful Brazos River Valley scenery.
Head east across the Brazos River and the topography changes to endlessly flat floodplains and agricultural fields, with Bryan-College Station 30 miles to the north. Brenham is 20 miles south; Houston, 80 miles southeast.
