The bustling little center of Boerne (pronounced 'Bernie') was settled by German immigrants in 1849. The town, which clings strongly to its German roots, is less overrun with tourists than Fredericksburg and is a pleasant place to spend a few hours.
Main St focuses on antique stores, most of which stock a handy leaflet that will help you navigate around the plethora of shops. The Cibolo Creek Trail, a paved path stretching 1.75 miles along scenic Cibolo Creek on the outskirts of downtown, is especially nice in the late afternoon and before sunset. Boerne is also a good launchpad for exploring regional cave systems.
