Among the country’s oldest ski areas in continuous use and on the Colorado State Register of Historic Places, this is a relatively modest hill by current standards – only 14 runs, one double chair, a Poma lift, a magic carpet and a boardwalk area. It’s the place to go if you’re minding your budget. There are 13 miles (21km) of Nordic trails here.
More impressive than anything is watching the aspiring Olympians vault off the jumps here. There’s an indoor ice-skating facility, the Howelsen Ice Arena, which operates from October until April. In the summer, check out the Howler Alpine Slide.
