Sitka levies a 12% city and bed tax on all lodging. Two USFS campgrounds are in the area, but neither is close to town. There are three or four comfortable, if bland, chain hotels.

Wilderness Cabins

Nearly two dozen disparate USFS cabins lie within 30 minutes’ flying time of Sitka. Among the most popular cabins are Baranof Lake Cabin, which enjoys a wondrous (though reportedly buggy) mountainous setting on the island’s east side; barrier-free Lake Eva Cabin, also on Baranof Island’s east shore, north of the Baranof Lake Cabin; and White Sulphur Springs Cabin, on the west shore of Chichagof Island, which is popular with locals because of the adjacent hot-springs bathhouse.

All cost $45 to $55 per night and should be reserved in advance through the USFS Sitka Ranger District Office or online at www.recreation.gov. For air-taxi service, try Harris Aircraft Services.
