Maximum stay Policy: 14 consecutive nights or an accumulative 14 nights during each calendar year.
Domestic guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. International guests under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
We welcome guests from everywhere outside of San Francisco county. At check in, all guests must present a valid government issued photo identification.
Please note that we try our best to keep people travelling together in the same room. However, sometimes we may not be able to do so due to room configuration or existing bookings. If you have a special request concerning this, please email the hostel directly.
Mixed Gender dorms range from 4,6, and 8 beds. We cannot guarantee a particular dorm size for your party when booking the '8-bed mixed dorm,' as room sizes are subject to availability. If you would like to request a particular dorm configuration for your party, please contact the hostel directly and we will do our best to make these arrangements.
Online prices do not include taxes. Daily bed rates of $40 or more are subject to a 15% tourist and hotel tax. Bed rates of less than $40 are taxed only a 1% tourist tax, per city regulations.Taxes are added at check in.
HI-San Francisco Downtown is operated by Hostelling International, a non-profit membership-based organization. Non-members will be asked to pay a $3/night daily membership fee upon check-in.
Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours prior to arrival or a 'no-show' fee equivalent to the first night's accommodation will be charged.
Groups larger than 9 must book directly with our group sales department to ensure availability and accurate pricing.
Housed in a charmingly renovated 1909 hotel, HI SF Downtown offers a wide assortment of room types, many with private bathrooms. Our dorms can sleep 4-8 people, and our private rooms come with either one double bed, two twin beds, or, in the case of our '3-person private' room, one double bed with a twin bunk up top. While you are out exploring the city during the day, our housekeeping staff makes the daily rounds in order to have the place squeaky clean and comfy when you return each evening.

We offer lots of free or cheap organized activities including pub crawls, walking tours of the Mission District and Chinatown, and bike trips across the Golden Gate Bridge. Feel like checking out the city on your own? We’re within walking distance of the Yerba Buena Gardens, the Metreon entertainment complex, Union Square shopping, Chinatown, and the cable cars that will take you to North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf. We’re also just 1 block from major MUNI bus lines, and 3 blocks from the BART trains that will get you to the San Francisco and Oakland airports on the cheap.
