With a maximum speed limit of 15mph, Old Fall River Rd offers motorists a graveled, slow-paced drive into the park’s high country. Narrow, one-way (up) and without guardrails, it’s also a bit hair-raising at times, and certainly not recommended for RVs.

The road begins at Horseshoe Park, a short distance west of the Fall River Entrance, and winds 11 miles up to the Alpine Visitor Center at Fall River Pass – elevation, 11,796ft. From there you can head southwest (right) on Trail Ridge Rd and follow it down to Grand Lake, or take a left and loop back to Estes Park. Although Old Fall River Rd doesn’t reach the dizzying heights of Trail Ridge Rd, the views of the alpine tundra and the narrowness of the road make this an equally impressive drive.
