City Tavern

American in Old City & Society Hill

As far as restaurants with costumed waiters go, this is a pretty good one – not too over-the-top and with solid, faintly historical food, such as spicy pepper pot soup. Even if you don't come for a full meal, it's fine to drop by for a drink or snack in its bar.

The building is a mostly historically accurate replica of the 1773 original tavern, which caught fire in 1834 and was demolished 20 years later. Pick up discount coupons, offering two entrées for the price of one, at the Independence Visitors Center.
