The verdant rainforest jungle along this stretch of the Old Mamalahoa Hwy proves that those annoying showers are worth it. Cruising the narrow road, you'll cross a series of one-lane bridges spanning little streams and waterfalls, under a tangle of trees, a dewy yin to the dry yang of the western side of the island.

Although the scenic drive meets Hwy 19 at either end, starting from the south (coming from the Hilo side) is much easier, with a signposted right turn between the 7- and 8-mile markers.
