Top Tips

Take a day and cycle to Mount Vernon along the eponymous 18-mile trail, which starts at the Theodore Roosevelt Island parking lot. If you start in Alexandria, it’s about 12 miles onward. The path hugs the river much of the way and you’ll pedal past a lighthouse, bird-filled marsh and 19th-century fort before heading uphill to George Washington’s manor.
