Welcome to Durham
Home a century ago to the world’s largest tobacco company – American Tobacco – Durham remains at heart a working-class Southern city. Its fortunes collapsed in the 1960s, however, along with the cigarette industry, and Durham’s recent revival owes much to the presence of the prestigious Duke University. The city’s downtown has been comprehensively rebuilt, and transformed into a hot spot for gourmands and artists, gays and lesbians. The changing winds were epitomized in 2017, when protesters toppled the Confederate monument that had stood outside the former county courthouse since 1924.
