Penn Station (not to be confused with the Penn Station in Newark, NJ) is the departure point for all Amtrak (www.amtrak.com) trains, including the speedy Acela Express service to Boston (four hours) and Washington, DC (three hours). The station, a confusing underground retail warren, is also a hub for NJ Transit, the Long Island Railroad and various subway lines.
In late 2016, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced plans to finally move forward with a long-awaited reconstruction, including a new main station entrance on W 33rd St fronted by a pedestrian plaza. Work is already underway to create a new train hall in the 1913 James A Farley Post Office opposite the station, with retail and a new Amtrak hub. It is due to be completed in 2020, but overall the big changes planned for Penn Station are expected to take years.
