Chef Ali is a larger-than-life personality and an anchor on the Steinway strip known as Little Egypt – though his creative, earthy food, often served straight from the frying pan to your plate, ranges much further than his Alexandrian roots. Start with mixed apps, for fluffy green Egyptian-style falafel, then pick any lamb dish.

Herbivores can opt for a vegetarian platter with its spread of baba ghanoush, hummus and falafel, perhaps followed by Egyptian moussaka (sautéed eggplant with zucchini, potato, tomato and spices).
