Surviving since the late 1800s in one form or another, this throw-back atmospheric bar way out in Red Hook is straight out of On the Waterfront. Of course, the longshoremen are long gone, replaced by loyal, passionate regulars and hipster newcomers looking for authenticity. Every Saturday at 10pm it hosts a foot-stomping bluegrass jam. Other banjo-pickin' and curious events happen throughout the week.

Hurricane Sandy dealt the bar a tough blow and it struggled to rebound from the damage. The bar's legendary owner Sunny Balzano passed away in 2016 and at the time of research its continuing existence was once more in doubt, this time by more ordinary real estate-related threats. Sunny's Nights: Lost and Found at a Bar on the Edge of the World by Tim Sultan (2016) is a loving portrait of the bar and its owner.
