Jeff 'Beachbum' Berry is a tiki-bar scholar. If a drink has rum, is served in a faux-Polynesian cup or comes with an umbrella and some fruit, the man has written on it. These drinks from across the tropics are served in Latitude 29, Jeff's bar devoted to all things tiki. They're excellent and the bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly.
Latitude 29's food (mains $8 to $28) is more than a gimmick as well. The sole downer is that, in what seems an affront to the otherwise alcohol-is-sacred attitude of the city, Latitude 29 is a rare place where you'll come in well before closing and be told, 'Sorry, we've already done last call.' The phrase 'last call' is so blasphemous in the Quarter that you can almost hear the needle scratching across the vinyl as you reply, 'Wait, what?!'
But they mean it. Not even a to-go-cup quickie.
The good news is that if you come early, you'll not be disappointed: the drinks are spectacular, presented nearly as art, and crafted with care.
