Once a rough-and-ready silver hub, Silver City is an endearingly quirky town – you know, the kind of place where a business sign might read, 'dog grooming and metaphysical center.' The streets of its historic downtown hold a lovely mishmash of old brick and cast-iron Victorian and thick-walled red adobe buildings, and the whole place still reeks of the Wild West. Billy the Kid spent some of his childhood here, and a few of his haunts still lurk amid the new coffee shops and art galleries.
A growing number of adventure addicts are coming to Silver City to work and play in its surrounding great outdoors: 15 mountain ranges, four rivers, the cartoonish formations of City of Rocks State Parks and the Gila National Forest are all in the vicinity. Plus, as home to Western New Mexico University, Silver City is infused with a healthy dose of youthful energy.
