Having boomed first as a railroad stop, and then as a uranium mining town, Grants today seems to be an ever-dwindling strip along Route 66, largely relying on jobs at state prison facilities nearby. Despite the dearth of inspiration in town, there are some great spots to stretch the legs nearby: the enormous swath of El Malpais National Monument to the southwest and the prominent Mt Taylor roughly 20 miles to the northeast.
