Norwottuck Rail Trail

Cycling in Northampton

The Norwottuck Rail Trail (pronounced nor-wah-tuk) is a wheelchair accessible walking and cycling path that follows the former Boston & Maine Railroad right-of-way from Amherst to Hadley to Northampton, a total distance of 11 miles. For much of its length, the trail parallels MA 9, passing through open farms and crossing the broad Connecticut River on a historic 1500ft-long bridge.

Parking and access to the trail can be found on Station Rd in Amherst, at the Mountain Farms Mall on MA 9 in Hadley and at Elwell State Park on Damon Rd in Northampton. From Northampton, the Mass Central Rail Trail extends west to Florence and south to Easthampton. You can rent bikes from Northampton Bicycle.
