In 2008 the historic, far-flung town of Wells was rocked by a shallow 6.0-magnitude earthquake that destroyed many of the town's heritage buildings. Sadly, it's never really recovered, and today feels a bit like a ghost town that people still inhabit.
Locals would want you to know that heavyweight boxing champ Jack Dempsey started his career here, as a bouncer in the local bars. After strolling around what's left of the Front Street historic district, its hard to imagine that there ever were any.
Southwest of town, scenic Hwy 231 heads into the mountains, climbing alongside sagebrush, piñon pine and aspen trees toward cobalt-blue Angel Lake (8378ft), a glacial cirque beautifully embedded in the East Humboldt Range.
