Where to Stay

South Beach

For

Lovely architecture, great restaurants and bars, and the beach on your doorstep.

Against

Prices are high, and it can feel very touristy. Noise an issue especially on Ocean Dr.

North Miami Beach

For

Peaceful beachfront and limited development make for a fine setting.

Against

Prices here are generally high, and mostly big-box options. More limited eating and drinking options.

Downtown Miami

For

Great views over Biscayne Bay, good dining and shopping options, proximity to excellent museums and performing arts spaces.

Against

Can feel a bit impersonal and corporate at times, the beach is distant (and hard to reach on public transit).

Wynwood & the Design District

For

Top-notch art galleries, shops, restaurants and bars. Great for art-lovers and nightlife seekers.

Against

Options are extremely limited here. Getting to other areas can be time-consuming without a car.

Little Haiti & the Upper East Side

For

Fascinating architecture from the MiMo (Miami Modern) period, good restaurants and bars, more local feel.

Against

Most options are right along noisy Biscayne Blvd. Getting around can be a pain.

Coconut Grove

For

Laid-back local feel, with nice choice of eateries and drinking spots, and easy access to the scenic waterfront.

Against

Limited options here, prices can be high. It's a fairly long way to Miami Beach, though Key Biscayne is closer.

Coral Gables

For

Generally excellent value and a local atmosphere. Good cafes and dining options, not much nightlife.

Against

Mostly bland chain hotels, aside from a few famous options (ie Biltmore Hotel). It's a long way to the beach and other parts of the city. You'll need a car (or spend a lot on taxis).

Little Havana

For

Local vibe. Delicious Latin cooking at your fingertips.

Against

Very few options, limited nightlife.

Key Biscayne

For

Beautiful beaches that will make you feel like you've gotten away from it all. Proximity to nature and outdoor activities.

Against

Limited accommodation options and not many restaurants. Hard to get around without a car.
