This rugged, strenuous 7.5-mile round-trip trek begins off Kokeʻe Rd at Puʻu o Kila Lookout. A mere mile in, Pihea Lookout appears. After a short scramble downhill, the boardwalk begins. About 1.8 miles later, you'll come to a crossing with the Alakaʻi Swamp Trail. Taking a left at this crossing puts you on the trail toward Kilohana Lookout.
Continuing straight on the Pihea Trail will take you to Kawaikoi Campground instead. Most hikers begin this trip at Puʻu o Kila Lookout because it's accessible via the paved road.
Both of these trails may be muddy and not recently maintained. The stretch between Alakaʻi Crossing and Kilohana Lookout includes hundreds of steps, which can be hell on your knees. Expect to take all day to finish the hike.
