Built in 1913 and decommissioned in 1976, Kilauea Lighthouse has been known to save aircraft from certain doom. It was shut down during WWII, so the island would not attract attention of would-be Japanese bombers. Tours to the top floor are offered hourly on Wednesday and Saturday. The first tour is at 10:30am and the last at 2:30pm.
It was added to the national registry of historic places in 1979.
