Within walking distance of downtown, Ketchikan’s most popular hike is a well-maintained 2.5-mile climb to the 3000ft summit of Deer Mountain. Along the way overlooks provide panoramic views – the first only a mile up the trail. To reach the trail, take the Bus’ Green Line to the corner of Deermount and Fair Sts and then head south on Ketchikan Lakes Rd.

Toward the top of the mountain are more trails that extend into the alpine region and a free-use shelter. But keep in mind this is a steady climb and a more challenging hike beyond the shelter.
