For a tropical hike, pick up the moderate Honolua Ridge Trail (1.25 miles one way) from the Maunalei Arboretum Trail. You’ll enjoy a spectacular mountain vista along the ridge before dipping back into the jungle-like forest for a view of Puʻu Kukui (5788ft), one of the wettest spots in the world, averaging 385in annually, and then a stroll through a stand of sugi trees.

From this trail you can pick up the difficult Mahana Ridge Trail (5.75 miles). Stay alert for ongoing trail maintenance and nearby construction activities. On your descent, at the sharp roadside bend after the telephone poles, turn right onto the dirt path, which leads to DT Fleming Beach, or follow the road left to return to the Kapalua Village Center.
