Route 66: Get Your Kicks in Kansas
Only 13 miles of Route 66 pass through the southeast corner of Kansas, but it's a good drive along Hwy 66 and US 69 (from east to west).
Three miles down the road is Riverton; here you might consider a detour 20 miles north to Crawford County, where legendary fried chicken is a hallmark of six famous restaurants around Pittsburg. Try Chicken Mary's, one of the best.
Cross US 400 and stay on old Route 66 to the 1923 Rainbow Bridge, the last marsh arch bridge remaining on the route.
From the bridge, it's less than 3 miles south to Baxter Springs, the site of a Civil War massacre and numerous bank robberies. A restored 1939 Phillips 66 gas station is the Kansas Route 66 Visitor Center. Military Ave (US 69A) takes you into Oklahoma.
