Dangers & Annoyances
Areas to the immediate east and southeast of downtown Houston have higher than average crime rates, but that description is by no means universal. The main areas of Houston are generally safe.

Travel with Children
Young 'uns gettin' restless? There's a great place to play right downtown, Discovery Green. Think playgrounds, play fountains, fun art and a kid-friendly restaurant.
In the museum district, Hermann Park is home to playgrounds, a lake with paddleboats and the Hermann Park Miniature Train. More than 4500 animals inhabit the semitropical, 55-acre Houston Zoo, also in the park. Activities include wildlife talks catering to different age groups and summertime zoo sleepovers. Don't miss feeding the giraffes daily at 11am and 2pm.
Walking distance from Hermann Park you'll find the high-octane, stupendously fun Children's Museum of Houston, where little ones can make tortillas in a Mexican village, or draw in an open-air art studio. A few blocks away, future surgeons will like checking out the huge organs on display at the interactive Health Museum.
Looking for a way to beat the summer heat? Take the kids to Ice at the Galleria. Yes, that's right, there's an ice rink right in the center of the city's biggest mall.
The official Houston Visitors Center is as much a giant souvenir shop as an info center; right across from the convention center.
