This creaky, old-fashioned hotel, popular with cyclists, is in the little town of Mitchell, about 10 miles southeast of the fossil beds' Painted Hills Unit. The good-size rooms are individually decorated, themed from floral to cowboy. Most have shared bathrooms; there's no TV and not much soundproofing. A dorm room has bunks. Call ahead December to March to make sure it's open.
The owners are friendly and have good advice about the area.
