When to Go

  • Hilo's rainiest month is November, followed by March and April. Least rainy months are May and June, but remember that showers occur year-round.
  • Summer tends to be hot and humid, while winter temperatures are balmy and comfortable.
  • Hilo is booked solid during the Merrie Monarch Festival, which starts on Easter Sunday. If planning to attend the festival, order tickets immediately after December 1 (prior year) and book accommodations up to a year ahead.
  • During winter high season, accommodations are pricier and often booked solid.
  • While papayas and bananas are available any time, some tropical fruits are seasonal. Mangoes and lychee, for example, are summer fruits.
