Surfing in Paʻia

The North Shore harbors Maui's legendary big-wave surfing spot: Jaws. In big swells, the wave reaches as high as a seven-story building. Local pros compare it to surfing a moving mountain, and it's a spectacular sight. Unfortunately for the public, there’s no legitimate access to the viewpoint, which is on private land. Your best bet when it's on is to watch the news.
