Welcome to Lahaina to Maʻalaea
You might need to do a double take when driving through this hyper-real area: the scenery could have been plucked straight from Jurassic Park or Avatar, but there are no special effects, this is all pure Maui. The drive between Lahaina and Maʻalaea is bursting with staggering views of the wild West Maui mountains on one side and the shimmering ocean on the other. In winter this section of Honoapi'ilani Hwy is like a ready-made whale-watching safari. Stay alert, though! Too many distracted drivers have their heads facing the shore, trying to spot humpback whales cruising just off land. Stand up paddle boarders and surfers are also a common sight and the rolling waves will make you want to pull your car over (like the locals often do) and jump in the water for a surf.
