Once traversed by the likes of Mark Twain, the caldera-crossing portion of this trail has been closed for several years due to the explosive activity at the other end. What is open is a pleasant path between the forested terraces descending beneath Volcano House to the bottom of Kilauea caldera.

Continue up the other side to the Kilauea Iki Trail and return along Waldron Ledge for a brisk 3.2-mile loop with 470ft of climbing. Grab a trail guide ($2, or download from the park website) to learn about things like 'walking' tree ferns which aimlessly ramble around the forest for thousands of years.
