Call in advance for a lesson with legendary pro big-wave surfer Titus Kinimaka or, more likely, with one of his minions who line up the boards daily on the beach or at the pier. No more than three students per instructor. Bonus: they'll let you use the boards for a couple of hours after the lesson.
If you're already experienced and confident in heavy surf, you can also arrange private, tow-in classes. You'll have to prove you belong first. The surf shop is also a nice spot to grab board shorts, a rash guard, bikinis or even a GoPro to document your adventure.
