The park encompasses three major geological areas. The Grand Staircase is in the westernmost region, south of Bryce Canyon and west of Cottonwood Canyon Rd. The Kaiparowits Plateau runs north–south in the center of the monument, east of Cottonwood Canyon Rd and west of Smoky Mountain Rd. Canyons of the Escalante lies at the easternmost sections, east of Hole-in-the-Rock Rd and south of the Burr Trail, adjacent to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
