This primitive rim-to-river scramble through Red Canyon is one of Grand Canyon's most isolated and difficult trails, and it should not be attempted without checking conditions at the Backcountry Information Center and leaving word of your departure with friends. From the trailhead, it's 6.5 miles to Hance Rapids.

NPS recommends the following wilderness maps, available on Amazon, for anyone hiking New Hance: Trails Illustrated, Map 261 or 262, 2009 (National Geographic) or Sky Terrain Trails Map, Grand Canyon (Sky Terrain).
