With the exception of a few ski-lift chairs and chondolas rising from Parkway to nearby mountaintops, you won't find many outdoor adventures in downtown Gatlinburg. If you need to stretch your legs or escape the crowds, follow Parkway south to River Rd, which begins near the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Off River Rd you can step onto the Gatlinburg Trail, a 2-mile path through the woods that ends at the park's Sugarlands Visitor Center.
