Lover's Leap State Park

Hiking in Candlewood Lake

A surprising little gem just south of New Milford town, Lover's Leap is home to Falls Bridge, one of the state's five remaining iron lenticular truss bridges (it's a vision in rusty red). The bridge leads to a three-quarter-mile moderately easy walk past the lookout and down to the Housatonic River (aka Lake Lillinonah).

Lover's Leap is named for the rocky overlook where (allegedly!) Native American maiden Lillinonah (Chief Waramaug's daughter) and her European lover plunged to their deaths in a Nutmeg-State Romeo-and-Juliet story.
