The site of one of Colorado's first ski resorts (1937–2002), Berthoud Pass (11,307ft) remains a popular spot for backcountry skiers and snowshoers. There is significant avalanche danger here, however, so don't even think about going out unless you have the proper gear and training. Friends of Berthoud Pass offers free avalanche courses in winter; see the website for details.
The pass is also a great place to get on the Continental Divide Trail in summer. Stanley Mountain (12,521ft) is a 7-mile round-trip hike; from the parking lot, cross the highway to access the trail.
