Welcome to Lake City
It’s hard to believe that the ‘flyspeck’ seat of Hinsdale County was once known as the Metropolis of the Mines. But back in the 1870s, while so many other mining towns would swell and dwindle with the prosperity of the lodes, Lake City boasted a population of 5000 people. Settlers built Greek and Gothic Revival buildings and tree-lined streets that reflected a nostalgia for their homes back east. Today less than a fifth of that population remains, making this remote town a quiet base for exploring the mountains.
