Recent investment in regional tourism has meant that rafting the Royal Gorge or being incarcerated in one of the area's 13 prisons (you read that right) are no longer the only reasons people come to town. Granted, they're still the main reasons, but not the only ones.
Yes, there's no getting around it: Cañon City is a prison town. Most of the town's population work in the incarceration business in some capacity. There's even a prison on the main street. While these facts do give the place a certain vibe, you can't downplay the beauty of the majestic Rockies that abut the town, nor the striking, adrenaline-delivering Royal Gorge just outside it. The area offers some spectacular scenic drives and two excellent new museums.
