South & North Beaches
Want to really get away from it all? The offshore barrier beaches of South Beach and North Beach offer miles of uninhabited sands ideal for sunbathing, ocean dips and long walks. It's common to see seals here; there are so many of them, in fact, that great white sharks, which feed on seals, are now drawn to these waters in summer. The Atlantic sides have surf, while the Chatham-facing bay sides have calm waters. Swimming is occasionally restricted because of the sharks, so check before heading off. There's no shade or facilities, so bring water, snacks and sunscreen.
Beachcomber operates a water taxi to North Beach from Chatham Fish Pier.
