Welcome to Ukiah
As the county seat and Mendocino’s largest city, Ukiah is mostly a utilitarian stop for travelers to refuel the car and get a bite. But, if you have to stop here for the night, you could do much worse: the town is a friendly place that's gentrifying. There is a plethora of cookie-cutter hotel chains, some cheaper mid-century motels and a handful of very good dining options. The coolest attractions, a pair of thermal springs and a sprawling campus for Buddhist studies complete with 10,000 golden Buddha statues, lie outside the city limits. There are also some excellent wineries and tasting rooms within easy access from the center; the helpful Chamber of Commerce can point you in the right direction. Ukiah has a pleasant, walkable shopping district along School St near the courthouse, where you can find some idiosyncratic small shops and larger chains.
