Welcome to Trinidad
Cheery, tiny Trinidad perches prettily on the side of the ocean, combining upscale mid-century homes with a mellow surfer vibe. Somehow it feels a bit off-the-beaten-path even though tourism augments fishing to keep the economy going. Trinidad is also a big hit with ornithologists; it's home to one of the most diverse seabird colonies in California. The town gained its name when Spanish sea captains arrived on Trinity Sunday in 1775 and named the area La Santisima Trinidad (the Holy Trinity); later it was the site of bloody battles and raids against the local Native Americans during the Civil War. Around this period, it also experienced a boom, becoming an important port for miners. If you can, check out the superb beaches and rocky coves and stop for a seafood meal overlooking the water.
