San Diego Coast Day Tour

The coastal tour begins at Cabrillo National Monument which has the best views of San Diego Harbor. The museum displays the artifacts from when Cabrillo landed in 1542. Up the hill to the first lighthouse in San Diego and the lighthouse museum. Steep drive down to the water and Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach. Past the bars and restaurants on Newport Ave into Mission Bay and Pacific Beach. Take a quiet stroll along the bay behind the Catamaran Hotel before crossing over to the hustle and bustle of the boardwalk on the ocean. Check out the old wooden Crystal Pier before heading to our furthermost northern beach town of Encinitas. A stop for lunch and then over to the beautiful tranquil gardens, Koi ponds and exquisite bluff views overlooking the Pacific Ocean. A short ride over to one of the best surfing spots in North County called Swami's. We descend the long spiral stairs down to the tidepools on the beach. Back in the van to cruise along Highway 101 through Cardiff, San Elijo, Solana Beach, Del Mar, Carmel Valley and up the grade into Torrey Pines. At our next stop we watch the Hang Gliders and Parasailors soar off the cliffs at Torrey Pines Glider Port. Winding our way down to La Jolla Shores to watch the kayaks launch on their journey to the sea caves. Entering La Jolla Cove we are on top of the sea caves and walk down to Seal Beach where everyone can watch the seals playing in there native habitat. Back up to Prospect Street through downtown to La Jolla Blvd and on our way back to the hotel through Bird Rock and Pacific Beach.For a completely different feel, opt to head east to the rural countryside and the old gold mining town of Julian, (a Unesco Heritage Sight) located at the junction of 3 different mountain ranges. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and breathe in the country air. After lunch and famous home grown apple pie and ice cream the tour will start the 2400 foot descent down to the desert floor and arrive at Anza Borrego State Park visitor's center. The largest desert state park in the nation. Catch the setting sun on our return to downtown.

Before starting the tour your host will describe the destinations and offer options that are possible along the 190 mile 8 hour round trip.Pickup at your hotel at 9am. Head north along the 15 freeway and east up the Poway grade to the western town of Ramona. Travelling through rural California to famous Dudley's bakery in Santa Ysabel and through the Cleveland National Forest into Wynola and Julian. Stop for lunch and to taste the amazing apple pie, ice cream and cider home grown in the historic gold mining town of Julian. Fantastic 2400 foot winding descent down to the desert floor. Then a 4 mile drive to Font's point. Short hike to the lookout point for a view of the badlands. Head over to the visitor's center to find out about the history and habitat of the animals and vegetation of the desert. Now for a sandy 1.5 mile drive to Slot Canyon. We climb down 50 feet and hike the 1/2 mile through the canyon walls protected from the burning sun.

Mountain and Desert Tour from San Diego

Head north along the 15 freeway and east up the Poway grade through the mountains on our way to the old western town of Ramona. Our 1st stop is at Dudley's bakery in the 1 corner town of Santa Ysabel. Amazing breads and other fresh baked goods for your pallet. Back on the winding mountain road to our lunch stop at Wynola. Take a look at the old gold mine across the street. 3 miles down the road we arrive in Julian. Lots of interesting shops and buildings to explore and some famous apple pie and cider for desert. A long but stunning drive winding around the sides of the mountain on our way down to the dessert floor and the town of Borrego Springs. Driving around Christmas Circle and the main shopping area till we arrive at the visitor's center at Anza Borrego State Park. Inside Anza Borrego State Park are the descriptions of all the native plants and animals that are indigenous to the area as well as some history about the area going back several million years. Outside are trails with plaques telling you the names of the different plants. A stop for a cool drink at the lounge overlooking the Rams Hill golf course is a must before we begin our trip back. We climb back up the grade and chase the setting sun as we come through the mountains on highway 8 heading towards the ocean and downtown San Diego.
