At glorious Mt Bachelor (9065ft), Central Oregon's cold, continental air meets up with the warm, wet Pacific air. The result is tons of fairly dry snow and plenty of sunshine – excellent conditions for skiing. With 370in of snow a year, the season begins in November and can last until May.
Mt Bachelor has about 35 miles of cross-country trails, though the day pass (adult/child $15/8) may prompt skiers to check out the free trails at Dutchman Flat Sno-Park, just past the turnoff for Mt Bachelor on Hwy 46. This is as far as the snowplows maintain the highway during winter.
If there's adequate snow at lower elevations you can also cross-country ski from the Virginia Meissner or Swampy Lakes Sno-Parks, between Bend and Mt Bachelor on Hwy 46. To use all these Sno-Parks you'll need a Sno-Park permit, which is available from area businesses ($4 for one day, $9 for three days, $25 annual pass).
In summertime you can go hiking and mountain biking on the mountain, and take the chairlift to a meal at Pine Marten Lodge, which has restaurants offering awesome mountain views.
