Mountain View has managed to parlay Ozark culture into the sort of tourism you can (partially) build an community on. The folkways and creative expression of the mountains are given exuberant life in this village, and a mix of cultural seekers and the creators of the culture that's being sought out yields an odd nexus of deeply spiritual Christianity, hippie folk music and heartfelt hospitality.
The Visitor Information Center promotes Mountain View as the 'Folk Music Capital of the World,' and while that may be ambitious, it doesn't detract from Mountain View's fundamental pleasantness. No matter how you get here, you'll inevitably pass through crumbling Ozark towns fallen on hard times. Mountain View, in contrast, is what the area could be: preserved history finding contemporary voice and energy in a globalized world that still wants to connect to deep regional traditions.
