Getting There & Away

The only way to really explore Hwy 101 is with your own wheels, especially to reach the most remote and wild parts of the North Coast. Be aware, however that escaping the Bay Area at rush hour (weekdays between 4pm and 7pm) can be time consuming and you may well sit bumper-to-bumper through Santa Rosa or Willits, where trucks bound for the coast turn onto Hwy 20. If you are really set on bus travel, Greyhound runs buses between San Francisco and Ukiah, ($44, three hours, daily) and Willits ($44, 3½ hours, daily). The Mendocino Transit Authority operates bus 65, which travels between Willits, Ukiah and Santa Rosa daily, with an afternoon return ($26.25, three hours, four daily). Bus 75 heads north every weekday from Gualala to the Navarro River junction at Hwy 128, then runs inland through the Anderson Valley to Ukiah, returning in the afternoon ($6.75, 2½ hours, daily).
