This is a walking tour, followed by lunch. The tour focuses on the homes, architecture and culture in the Garden District and the historical background for its development. In addition to the neighborhood, we visit the Lafayette Cemetery #1 and explain the customs for burials in New Orleans. The walking portion takes between 1.5-2 hours. After the walking segment, we finish with lunch at Commander's Palace (proper attire required). If you choose to finish with lunch, most people spend about $40 on lunch.
We will typically meet in the Garden District to begin the tour at 10am. We first visit Lafayette Cemetery #1 and explain the burial customs dictated by the topography of the city. We then walk through the Garden District to discuss the architecture, social systems and economics that resulted in the building of the Garden District. We visit homes of famous people such as Archie Manning, Anne Rice, John Goodman and Sandra Bullock. We will have made lunch reservations at Commander's and our walking tour will end to coincide with our lunch reservations. (This is a reservation-dependent tour, meaning that the Commander's portion of the tour depends on our ability to acquire reservations at the time of booking.) If Commander's is booked on the date you choose, an alternative restaurant will be substituted.
